Most people use their phone as a stopwatch when running; however, we all know how difficult it can be to carry an iPhone in your pocket, especially if you've got one of the bigger ones.

You could get a phone holder, but who wants a large case strapped to their arm when running?

To combat this common problem, I recommend getting yourself a stopwatch. That way, you can leave your phone at home. Not only that, but they're great for both running and sprinting.

In this article, I'm going to discuss the five best stopwatches for running. After reviewing each product, you'll learn the reason why I chose these stopwatches. I'll also answer some related questions.

Why I'm Qualified

After spending years struggling to wake up due to bad alarm clocks, I set out to uncover which alarms are worth purchasing. It's been years of trial and error; however, I've finally figured out the alarm clocks industry.

I also created the Online Stopwatch that is loved by thousands of people around the world.

Casio HS-80TW-1EF Digital Black Stopwatch

Best Feature: Buttons Don't Push Themselves in Your Pocket

If you're looking for a heavy-duty stopwatch that can withstand pressure, the Casio Digital Stopwatch is your best friend. It's made from Resin and has multiple functions that make it great for running.

One of these functions is the ability to time each lap. That means if you're running five miles, you can set the timer to record your time at each lap. Using this function won't cause the stopwatch to stop recording your overall time.

It also has lap memory. Lap memory lets you record certain times and save them for future reference. I really like this feature because it allows you to keep track of your fastest times and try to beat them in the future.

When it comes to the design, it's perfect for running. With some stopwatches, the buttons can be flimsy, causing them to be pushed accidentally while in your pocket. You won't have that issue with this stopwatch, as the buttons require a slight pressure to function.

So how about the downsides?

I discovered the only way to change the battery is by going to an authorized Casio distributor. With that being said, it does last up to 5 years, so don't worry about it too much.

Also, the lanyard isn't detachable, which can be an inconvenience for some people.

  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Has a lap split function
  • Built-in lap memory
  • Feels comfortable in your hand

  • Battery needs to be replaced by Casio distributor after 5 years
  • The lanyard isn't detachable

Marathon Adanac Dual Power Solar Stopwatch Timer

Best Feature: Fits Well in Your Hand

While the Marathon Solar Stopwatch Timer doesn't have a clock or alarm feature, it's still great for runners looking to record their times.

The first thing you notice when holding this stopwatch is how well it fits in your hand. Some stopwatches have a tendency to slip out of your hand and get damaged, especially if you've been sweating.

You won't have that problem with this one, though!

What's more, the digits on the display screen are clear enough to read, even with the sun beating down.

Similar to the Casio Stopwatch, this one can also time your laps; however, it can only recall the first nine. That means if you're running more than nine miles, it won't record lap times for your whole run.

This means it can't be used for marathons unless you're not interested in recording your lap times.

  • Fits well in your hand and doesn't split
  • Large digits that are easy to read during the day
  • Times your laps
  • Comes with a lanyard

  • Can only record the first nine laps, making it useless for marathons
  • Does have a clock or alarm feature

Robic Dual Stopwatch/Countdown Timer

Best Feature: Large and Clear Display

The first thing I noticed about the Robic Stopwatch is the easy-to-read display screen. It isn't confusing and covered in loads of different numbers, making it great for people who haven't used a stopwatch before.

It's also water-resistant, so it won't get damaged in light rain; however, I wouldn't recommend it for running in heavy rain.

What's more, there is also a built-in alarm that's meant to wake you up in the morning; however, it's not very loud, so I wouldn't rely on it. You'll probably sleep through it.

Included in the box are a set of instructions. While these aren't going to be necessary for people who use stopwatches, if you're a beginner, they are essential. You'll learn how to use the split/lap feature, which is great for running.

Although this stopwatch comes with a battery installed, there isn't a way to put it into sleep mode. This is going to drain the battery quicker than other models on the market.

  • Easy to read display
  • Water-resistant
  • Comes with detailed instructions
  • Split/lap feature

  • The alarm noise isn't very loud
  • Can't put the stopwatch into sleep mode

Gymboss Interval Timer and Stopwatch

Best Feature: Has a Vibration Mode

The Gymboss Stopwatch is a little different from other stopwatches on the market. Rather than hanging around your neck with a lanyard, it clips onto the inside of your pants.

According to previous customers, the clip works well and doesn't detach from your body, even when running at high speed.

Its main feature is the ability to time intervals; hence why it's good for runners. You can also set the rest time for each interval, which is great if you're making sprints and don't want to carry your phone around with you.

When it arrives, you'll need to purchase an AAA battery, as it doesn't come included in your purchase.

Similar to the Robic Stopwatch, it also comes with instructions, saving you a whole load of time.

While I couldn't find many downsides, I did discover the beeping sound isn't super loud, especially if there is background noise; however, you should be okay when running in quiet areas.

  • Clips to the inside of the pants
  • The clipper doesn't detach
  • Can time intervals (great for sprints)
  • Comes with instructions

  • Isn't loud enough with background noise
  • Doesn't have the option to be used with a lanyard

Timex Full-Size Ironman Rugged 30 Watch

Best Feature: Bright Backlight

Check Price on Amazon

The Timex Ironman is a watch; however, it does have a built-in stopwatch which is great for running. Not only that, but it's waterproof up to 100 meters. This means you can run in heavy rain without it getting damaged.

What's more, it's got a black display screen with gray numbers, making it difficult to read during the day. With that being said, there is a bright blue backlight that's operated by pressing a button.

However, using the backlight every time you check the time is going to drain the battery faster.

According to previous customers, this watch tends to last for years to come. Some customers were even saying how it lasted six years without becoming damaged or needing to be replaced.

Of course, I can't guarantee it's going to last that long; however, it gives me hope!

In terms of downsides, I found that it gets scratched easily.

  • Waterproof up to 100 meters
  • Display screen backlight
  • Can withstand the roughest terrain

  • It gets scratched easily
  • The display screen is difficult to see without the backlight

Running Stopwatch Buyers Guide

While most stopwatches have lanyards, sometimes you may need to keep them in your pocket, which could cause them to fall out when running over rough terrain. To prevent it from breaking when this happens, you need to purchase one that's durable.

Not only that, but well-made stopwatches also have a longer lifespan, even if they aren't dropped occasionally.

There's nothing more annoying than purchasing a stopwatch, only to realize it doesn't keep the correct time. If you want to prevent this from happening, I recommend purchasing from reliable brands such as Casio and Marathon.

The stopwatch you purchase doesn't have to be water-resistant, but it's a nice feature to have. After all, you're probably going to be running in the rain at some point, right!?

When shopping for stopwatches, it's important you know the difference between waterproof and water-resistant.

Waterproof stopwatches can be submerged underwater up until a certain depth.

On the flip side, water-resistant stopwatches can only withstand splashes of water.

Split Timing

Split timing is a great feature to have when choosing the best stopwatch for running. It allows you to time how long each lap took. That means if you set out to run nine miles, you can time how long each mile takes.

Some stopwatches even go a step further and offer you the chance to recall a certain number of laps. This means you can come back in the future and check your best times.

What is a stopwatch?

A stopwatch is similar to a watch; however, rather than displaying the time, it's used to time certain activities. They are typically used in sporting events that require laps to be completed.

However, they can be used in everything from cooking to studying.

How does a stopwatch work?

In a nutshell, the purpose of a stopwatch is to calculate the time it takes to complete certain tasks. However, some stopwatches have a number of other features, such as split and lap timing, alarms, memory recall, and more.

For running, I recommend going to a stopwatch that at least has a lap timing feature.

Final Verdict

I hope this article has helped you choose the best stopwatch for running. As you can see, there are certain features you need to look out for. To recap, I recommend the Casio Stopwatch. It has all the essential functions for running and is super durable.
