It's important to have a good classroom timer that can help you keep track of the kids' activities. Without one, you won't know how long your pupils have been working for.

Alternatively, you may be a student looking to time themself for an important test or exam. In which case, a high-quality timer is also going to be beneficial for studying and improving your speed.

In this article, I am going to review the five best classroom timers for students and teachers alike. You will learn the pros and cons of each one, as well as an in-depth review and summary explaining which ones are best for which purposes.

If you're in a hurry, my top is the Time Timer MOD. I like this timer because portable, compact, and has a large and easy-to-read display screen.

Why I'm Qualified

After having difficulties waking up, I made it my mission to find the best alarm clock. During this time, I also discovered the best timers and have used my knowledge to write this blog post.

I also designed the Online Timer, used by many teachers as an online classroom timer.

Time Timer MOD

While this timer isn't the biggest on the list, it's super portable, making it great for the classroom. If you're a student looking to keep track of time while working, you can place it on your desk without taking up too much space.

On the flip side, if you're a teacher and want to time your students, the same applies.

You'll be able to set your countdown timer between 1-60 minutes. In my opinion, this is great if you want your students to study for a specific period and then take a small break to increase productivity levels.

The timer also displays how much time is left in bright red.

When time is up, the alarm will start sounding. After extensive research, I found the alarm to be on the quieter side. While this may not be an issue when students are taking mock exams, it may pose a problem in a noisy classroom.

What's more, the clock itself comes with a rubberized cover. This goes a long way in preventing it from falling off of tables.

However, it also aids in the build-up of dust, which can hinder the clock's ability to perform well over the long term.

  • Portable and compact design
  • Set timer between 1-60 minutes
  • Great for taking exams
  • Has a rubberized cover to prevent falling
  • Displays how much time is left in bright red

  • Rubberized cover has a tendency to collect dust
  • Not loud enough for a very noisy classroom

Secura 7.5-Inch Oversize Visual Countdown Timer

Best for Noisy Classroom

If you want something that has a modern design and comes in multiple colors, this is the timer for you (or your students).

Similar to the Time Timer MOD, it also has a blue (or red) surface area that displays how much time is remaining. It's also larger than the Time Timer MOD, making it easier to read for students with glasses.

Although it comes with a back stand, there is also a magnet on the back so it can be attached to the whiteboard. That way, students can easily view how long they have left.

Unlike the previous timer on this list, this one lets you adjust the alarm volume. This makes it great for noisy classrooms and hectic environments.

Alternatively, you can prevent the alarm from sounding and just use it as a visual timer.

In terms of downsides, I found it only lets you count down from 60 minutes. Whilst this is usually enough, there may be some tasks that require additional time.

Also, the larger size may be great for some teachers; however, if you plan to take it to and from school each day, it may be a little bulky.

It works best when left permanently in the classroom.

  • Comes in multiple colors
  • Large and easy to read display
  • Can be attached to the whiteboard with a magnet
  • Adjustable volume
  • Can be used without an alarm

  • The larger size makes it more difficult to transport everyday
  • Can only count down from 60 minutes

Learning Resources Time Tracker

Best for Elementary Schools

If you work in an elementary school, this timer is the one for you! Rather than having a classic modern-looking design that's more suitable for teenagers, it's colorful and appeals more to a younger audience.

It doesn't have your typical clock interface, allowing students to see how much time is remaining; however, it changes color depending on how much time is left.

With that being said, it doesn't display the exact number to the students, making it a race against time. Although, there is a small display screen on top of this timer, informing the teacher how much time is remaining.

The great thing is there is no 60-minute limit, making it great for timing longer classroom activities.

There is also a pause button located next to the small LED screen. This can be used to time certain intervals if that's something you need for your students.

  • Design appeals to a younger audience
  • Changes color to indicate how much time is left
  • Small LED screen on top of the timer
  • Can pause the time if required
  • No 60-minute limit

  • Doesn't have a clock interface
  • A little difficult to set up

Teacher Created Resources Small Sand Timers

Best for Classrooms without Noise Distractions

If you want to purchase something that's fun and engaging for younger pupils, these small sand timers are perfect. Each color specifies a certain amount of time.

To use them, turn your desired timer upside down, and when the sand fills the bottom section, time is up. With that being said, you can purchase these timers as a ten pack combo, which I recommend, or by themself.

The great thing is they are compact, portable, and lightweight. This means carrying them to work each morning shouldn't be too big an issue as they fit snug in a small bag.

While sand timers are typically outdated, these ones pose a great modern-looking design, making your classroom look great.

In terms of downsides, there aren't many options when it comes to time. The sand timer with the maximum time is only 10 minutes, which may not be ideal for some teachers.

What's more, due to their lightweight design, they are prone to damage if dropped from a height. Therefore, make sure none of your pupils accidentally knock them over.

  • Comes in a pack of 10
  • Small and compact
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Great for younger pupils
  • Multiple colors

  • The maximum timer is only 10 minutes
  • Prone to damage if dropped

Time Timer TWIST 90-Minute Digital Countdown Clock

Best for Timing Longer Durations

The Time Timer Twist Countdown Clock is very similar to the Secura Countdown Timer. They both have magnets attached to the back, letting you attach them to appliances throughout the classroom.

In turn, this makes it easier for all students to see how long they have left.

This one also has a small built-in LED screen, displaying how much longer is remaining. It can also go up 90 minutes, which is 30 minutes more than the Secura Countdown Timer.

Using this timer is super easy. Simply twist the outer ring until you reach your preferred time and press the play button. You can also pause the timer throughout, which is a nice feature to have.

When it comes to downsides, I found there is no way to turn it off. That means the batteries will need changing more frequently.

Also, there isn't a back stand, which is normally standard with these types of timers.

Guess sticking it to the whiteboard will have to do!

  • Magnet attached to the back
  • Small LED screen to see the time
  • Easy to operate
  • Pause button
  • Modern-looking design

  • Doesn't have a back stand
  • Can't turn off this timer

What To Look For When Choosing A Classroom Timer

Portable, compact & lightweight

When choosing a classroom timer, it's important to go for something that's portable, lightweight, and compact. That way, you can easily bring it from home to the classroom without any issues.

The type of design you choose isn't going to affect the performance of the timer; however, it's still important for your pupils. If you're an elementary school teacher, I recommend going for something that's colorful and eye-catching.

On the flip side, high school teachers should look for something that's sleek and modern.

Pause option

While a pause button isn't essential, it's a nice feature to have as it gives you a little more control.

Timer length

Before purchasing a timer, you need to consider the length of time you need it for. If you only need to keep track of time for 20 minutes, you'll need to choose a different type of timer than if you're going to be timing 1-hour exams.

Final Verdict

Getting a classroom timer is a great way to keep track of your student performance. They are also great for exams and periods of essential study. To summarize this article, I recommend the Time Timer MOD thanks to its large easy to read display and modern-looking design.
