Whether your child is waking up during the night or not waking up on time, there are certain alarm clocks out there that help eliminate these problems.

Wouldn't it be nice to wake up to the sound of your alarm, rather than your child screaming at 3 AM!?

That's why I've gone ahead and created this article that's going to review the best alarm clocks for kids.

But before we dive in.

I want to announce my top pick for people that don't have time to read the whole article.

My number one choice is the LittleHippo Mella Children's Trainer.

It's perfect for children aged 3-4 who wake up at abnormal times throughout the night.

The clock's facial expression will change, letting your child know whether it's time to wake up or go to sleep.

Now you know my favorite toddler alarm clock, let's look at some alternatives.

Mella - designed by LittleHippo - is perfect for young children around age 4 who wake up during the night.

When it's time to sleep, Mellas (the clock) facial expression will change to sleeping. When your child sees this, they know it's too early to wake up.

On the flip side, when it's time to wake up, Mella's eyes will open, and the light around her face will turn green. This makes it easy for your 4-year-old to know whether they need to go back to sleep if they wake up during the night.

You can change the controls using the buttons located on the bottom. Once you've set everything up, you can lock the controls so your child can't change them.

However, 4-year-olds are smarter than they seem and can easily work out how to unlock the controls. For this reason, I'd like to see an app that lets parents set an alarm from their phones in future models.

Some parents were also complaining about the wake-up light being too bright. It illuminates the whole room and has a similar effect to turning on the light.

  • Great for teaching kids to stop waking you up during the night
  • Changing facial expression when it's bedtime
  • The clock lights up green when it's time to wake up
  • Button controls are hidden on the bottom

  • Your child can easily learn how to turn off the lock feature
  • The wake-up light can be too bright for some kids

I·CODE Time to Wake Alarm Clock for Kids

This clock is very similar to the LittleHippo Mella. However, there is a key difference. Rather than having a hard to distinguish face on the LED screen, this one changes between the sun and moon, depending on the time.

And by age 5, every child knows the difference between the moon and sun, right!?

When it comes time for your child to wake up, you can set an alarm. The Time To Wake Alarm has both softer and more abrupt sounds, depending on your child's preference.

For a 5-year-old, I recommend going for the softer sounds as they will wake up your child gradually.

It also doubles up as a white noise machine, which is great if your child has difficulty sleeping at night. Simply choose a sound, and the white noise will play for your preferred time.

So how about the downsides!?

It doesn't come with dual alarms, meaning you'll need to manually change the alarm time on weekends.

Because who wants their 5-year-old waking up at 6 AM on weekends, right!?

Also, some customers were complaining that it's difficult to set up at first; however, once you get the hang of it, it's easy.

  • Easy to understand LED screen for kids
  • Choose between a softer or more intense alarm
  • Doubles up as a white noise machine
  • Relaxing noises help your child sleep better

  • Doesn't have a dual alarm feature to cycle weekday and weekend alarms
  • It's a little confusing to set up at first

FiveHome Kids Alarm Clock

The FiveHome Kids Alarm Clock is a modern-looking clock that includes a sleep trainer, letting your child know when to wake up.

You can set the nap timer for a duration of either 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. Once the designated time has been reached, the light will turn off, altering your child that it's bedtime.

What's more, you can also set this alarm so that it changes to a specific color when it's time to wake up. There are five colors to choose from that can be changed between 5 levels of brightness.

I recommend letting your child choose which color they prefer, as it gives them more control.

To change the brightness levels, simply tap the top of the alarm clock. With each tap, the brightness level will increase or decrease.

You can also change the colors on the LED screen to either blue or white, depending on your child's preference.

So how about the downsides!?

I couldn't find much at fault with this clock; a lot of previous customers were happy with their purchase.

However, after extensive research, I found that some people were having difficulties setting it up and had to keep referring to the instruction manual.

With this in mind, I'd recommend keeping the instruction booklet for future reference.

Also, I found that the power cord is short, so you may need to use an extension lead to reach a power outlet.

  • You can set a timer, so your child knows when it's time to sleep
  • Five colors to choose from
  • Five levels of brightness
  • You can change the LED screen digits to blue or white

  • It's difficult to set up, so you'll need to refer to the instruction booklet
  • The power cord is short, so you may need an extension lead

Mesqool Alarm Clock for Bedroom

If you want the best kid's digital alarm clock, then this one is perfect. Unlike previous options on this list, it doesn't have a sleep trainer.

That's why we recommend it for older children. It's best suited for 8-year-olds.

What's more, it's easier to set up than others. After plugging it in, the time on the LED screen will start flashing.

Press the large gray button on the top left to change the hours and the gray button on the right the change the minutes. With most alarm clocks, you do this using the control panel located on the bottom, which can be confusing.

By age 8, there's a possibility your child has a mobile phone. If they do, then you'll be glad (or not so glad) that there are two USB charging ports on the back.

In addition, many customers switched over to this alarm clock because their previous one was too bright. This one allows you to adjust the brightness of the LED screen, which is great for children who can't sleep with bright lights.

How about the downsides!?

There is a built-in battery backup in case of a power outage; however, while it does a great job at keeping the time, it doesn't keep the LED screen running.

Also, the button to turn off the alarm is on the back and can be difficult for your child to locate, especially first thing in the morning.

  • Easy to set up the time
  • Has multiple phone charging ports
  • Adjustable brightness of the LED screen
  • Large and easy to read digits

  • The backup battery doesn't keep the LED screen on in a power outage
  • The button to turn off the alarm is difficult to locate

HomeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock

Best Alarm Clock for 9 or 10-Year-Old

I'm a big fan of sunrise alarm clocks and have been using them for many years. So, when I saw the HomeLabs Sunrise Alarm Clock, it caught my eye.

Mainly because it allows your child to wake up gradually using natural sunlight, which is great if they wake up in a bad mood.

Because who wants to be jolted awake by an annoying alarm clock in the morning!?

Your child can also wake up to nature sounds, including rushing water, rain, or birds. These are great if they are a heavy sleeper and needs that extra 'push'.

On the flip side, your child can use the sunset feature to mimic the sun going down when it's bedtime. You can choose between 15, 30, or 60 minutes.

During this time, the light will get dimmer until it shuts off when it reaches the designated time.

So what about the downsides!?

When your child hits the snooze button, the natural sunlight feature doesn't come back on, making it harder to wake up after the snooze period.

Also, it's difficult to set up at first. For this reason, you'll need to refer to the instruction manual.

  • Wakes your child up gradually rather than abruptly
  • Mimics natural sunlight to wake up your child
  • Has a sunset feature that can be set for 15, 30, or 60 minutes
  • Comes with optional nature sounds

  • If your child hits the snooze button, the sunlight feature doesn't turn back on
  • It's difficult to set up at first

How to Choose the Best Alarm Clock for Kids

While I've listed out my top 5 best alarm clocks for kids, I also wanted to give you an overview of what makes these clocks so great.

Here are some features to look out for.

It's important to have a budget in mind when choosing an alarm clock for your child. While you don't want to spend a fortune, I recommend going for an alarm that is middle of the road.

A lot of alarms say one thing on the product page but perform differently in person.

However, if you choose one from this list, you can be sure you're getting a good deal without a downgrade in quality.

Lockable controls

If you're going for an alarm clock with a sleep trainer, you need to ensure it has lockable controls.

Lockable controls prevent your child from altering the alarm and settings once they have been set.

And we all know how young children love pressing random buttons, right!?

Once they get older and start using a normal alarm clock, lockable controls become less of a concern.

Sleep trainer

When a young child wakes up during the night, they have a difficult time determining whether it's night or day. To combat this, you need an alarm clock that doubles up as a sleep trainer.

A sleep trainer displays a certain symbol on the LED screen when it's time to sleep and a different symbol when it's time to wake up.

For example, the Time To Wake Alarm Clock switches between a moon and sun depending on whether your child should be awake or sleeping.

So if your child wakes up in the middle of the night and doesn't know whether it's time to get up, they can look at the clock and see what symbol is being displayed.

As children get older, they can move over to a more traditional alarm clock.

Are alarm clocks beneficial for kids?

The benefits of an alarm clock depend on your child's age.

If they are younger than 5-years-old, then you should aim for an alarm clock with a sleep trainer. This will teach them when it's time to go to bed and when it's time to wake up.

As they get older, your child is more likely to sleep in than wake up during the night.

Therefore, the benefit of an alarm clock for older children is to get them out of bed in the morning!

What age should my child start using an alarm clock?

I recommend buying an alarm clock for your child once they reach age four. However, I'm not referring to a typical alarm clock. I'm talking about a sleep trainer clock.

Before your child can wake up to a standard alarm, they first need to understand when it's time to wake up and go to sleep.

Once you've taught your child this using a sleep trainer, you can switch to a more traditional alarm.

Final Verdict

I hope this article has helped you make an informed decision on the best children's alarm clocks.

If you've brought an alarm clock for your child with great success, I'd love to hear your thoughts. If I like what you have to say, I may even feature it in this article!
